UP CLOSE & PERSONAL is an important theme that can be different for everyone. We all experience different feelings and relationships and in our lives, we have a range of relationships that can be both formal and informal. Relationships could be with our friends, our family, coaches, mentors, church leaders etc. We will often change the style of the relationship if needed or if different people are around us. We also have a range of behaviours we use in relationships. We could see them in our body language, how we talk to people, how close we stand or if we touch others.

FOCUS ON: THERE IS ALWAYS A SOLUTION (US29306): Apply problem solving strategies to resolve day to day issues (5 credits)

The THERE IS ALWAYS A SOLUTION student learning workbooklet and NCEA L1 assessment package works through a range of activities that help students think about different situations they face that may trigger issues or need help to solve. This theme works through tasks that help students think about being in different situations that could trigger stress, anger, grief, making choices etc. It is useful to have already thought about what we may feel and how we could react in different situations so we have some strategies that will help us cope.

The AROUND OUR COMMUNITY workbooklet and NCEA L1 assessment material works through a range of activities to provide information about accessing and using facilities and services in a local community. Students are often unsure what is around us and what they can use easily. Some facilities or services may be for pleasure or may help them with a particular problem or issue. Once young people know what is around them, they can start to use that information to help look after themselves and others or plan how each facility or service can be used in the future.

Have a look through the following SLR outline for the fifth package we are outlining called A PERFECT PLAN (.pdf attached) showing how students can gain recognition and achieve NCEA Level 1 credits by having the right material at the right time for the right student.

FOCUS ON: A PERFECT PLAN (US29304): carry out plan to achieve set personal goals (4 credits)

Due to popular demand and a gap in supported learning material for technology subjects, A PERFECT PLAN works through a range of activities that provide information about planning a project (hard, or soft materials, food technology or a general project). We often make goals to help us in social, education, work, financial contexts etc. These goals can be broken down into steps so we know what to do & when to do each step. After we complete a goal, it is useful to look back and think about how effective our plan was to achieve, the steps we took, the timeframe to achieve the goal, and whether we would do it the same way next time, or for another goal.

Design & concepts

Steps on a plan & timeframes

Following the plan & completing goals

Evaluating the plan & looking forward

Feedback:

"At an IEP, a parent was concerned their daughter was enjoying her technology class but wasn't able to do the L1 credits like her peers. We contacted SLR to ask if they would create a technology-focused package, as there wasn't anything suitable out there. The SLR "A Perfect Plan" allowed Holly to gain credits for the hoodie she designed and made with support and she had three more ideas she wanted to start planning. Before we knew it, Holly had achieved her first 4 NCEA L1 credits in Supported Learning and we had a very happy parent contact us to say how proud they were of her. And so were we! The Technology teacher feedback how good the SLR resources were and how the TA was able to help Holly complete all the assessment tasks which meant she was supported throughout. A win-win! - Sue SENCo

NOTE: A great lead into these skills before NCEA L1 is the SLR DESIGN IT (!) & (2), and UPCYCLE IT workbooklets from the Series One Plus range.

The SLR story behind NCEA L1 package I'M IMPORTANT TOO - US29300 - maintain hauora - personal health & wellbeing:

Years ago one of our colleagues had a Year 11 PE class of 34 with at least 12 students not achieving credits due to the complex literacy in assessments and the learning challenges they faced every day. These students loved PE, needed to take time to be active during their school day, knew a lot of knowledge but they were struggling to access the NCEA L1 PE/Health achievement standards like their peers for a variety of recognised reasons.

So in 2013, we wrote the original SLR Fun Fitness package to offer NCEA L1 credits at the right level for these students who needed support with their learning about basic body anatomy, health/hygiene while still enjoying participating in leisure activities. Very quickly, those 12 students became more engaged, were positively participating and started achieving NCEA L1 credits because the material was at the right level for them and in a visual/active format that made sense ... and they were getting recognition for their skills and knowledge just like their peers.

That same SLR package was then also used with a selected group of Year 10-11 students in a learning support programme who were doing a health unit focusing on personal wellbeing and developing valuable life skills. These students needed tasks they could work through at their own pace, concepts to talk about, apply to their own needs and situations and link tasks to the activities they were involved in in their local community. That first year, three more students with high and complex needs in the SEN complex at the school and two more selected students with learning difficulties in an alternative education programme working offsite with tutors achieved their first NCEA L1 credits and went onto completing more Supported Learning packages. For more than five years this school has been promoting and showcasing the inclusive "success for all" ethos by offering "the right material, at the right time, to the right student".

The SLR Fun Fitness package has now been developed even further in the new suite of NZQA Supported Learning unit standards. US29300 (4 credits) focuses on "maintaining hauora - personal health & wellbeing" which keeps many of the successful Fun Fitness tasks, but also extends some of the wellbeing tasks to focus on modern day demands young people face.

Have a look through the following SLR outline for the fourth package we are outlining called I'M IMPORTANT TOO showing how students can gain recognition and achieve NCEA Level 1 credits by having the right material at the right time for the right student.
